How to Create Realistic Animal Skin Textures

Creating animal skins is very similar to creating any other type of texture. There are several steps involved in making a good texture.

Step 1 – Choose Your Subject
You should choose something that is easily recognizable by most people. If you choose something that is difficult to identify, then you may end up having to spend a long time trying to find someone who knows what it looks like.

Step 2 – Find a Good Reference Image
The next step is finding a reference image that has the same characteristics as the subject you chose. It should be taken under natural lighting conditions. Make sure that the background is not too bright or dark.

Step 3 – Adjust the Lighting
Once you have found a suitable reference photo, adjust its lighting until you get the desired effect. Use Photoshop’s Levels tool to lighten or darken parts of the image.

Step 4 – Select the Material
Now select the material that best represents the subject. You can do this by choosing one of the following options:
• Using a photograph of the actual object.
• Using a photograph or drawing of the object’s outline.
• Using a sketch of the object.
• Drawing the shape of the object directly onto the canvas.

Step 5 – Add Color Variations
Add variations in color by painting over the original image. Try different colors and shades to achieve the desired result.

Step 6 – Apply Reflections
Reflections add realism to the texture. To create these effects, duplicate the layer containing the reflection and move it slightly away from the original image. Then change the blending mode to Soft Light.
